Commenting on the news that a survey by the Communications Consumer Panel found that three quarters of people with broadband at home found that they could not live without it, and that soon it will be essential for everyone, Orkney MSP, Liam McArthur, said that this must be a wake up call to Government and that the Digital Britain report must include plans to make sure everyone in the UK had access to broadband with a download speed of at least 2Mb/s.
Liam McArthur said;
"This is further clear evidence that those of my constituents who struggle with very slow broadband, or who can't get any broadband connection at all, are being discriminated against. The survey found many who regarded their broadband connection as much of a right as their water and electricity supply.
"This is hardly surprising. As the report also highlights, many public and other services are now available only on line, and the danger is that those without broadband will be left at a serious disadvantage. More worrying still, with the internet such a vital tool in modern education, children in homes without broadband could suffer and potentially lose out in terms of qualifications.
"UK and Scottish Ministers must take heed of this report. The Digital Britain report must include plans to make sure everyone in the UK had access to broadband with a download speed of at least 2Mb/s. When Tom Johnston set up the Hydro Board, his aim was to bring Power from the Glens to everyone across the Highlands and Islands. We now need Ministers with Tom Johnston's vision to bring broadband to everyone."
