Commenting on the latest manufacturing figures published today, Liberal Democrat Finance spokesperson Jeremy Purvis said:
"The 19% decline in textile exports entirely vindicates the sector's concerns about the lack of specific Government support for the industry.
"Scottish weaving and cashmere production is by far the best in the world and is an iconic Scottish export. Yet, the Scottish and UK Governments have sat on their hands as the industry has struggled to cope during the recession.
"Today, I'm having further discussions in Innerleithen in my own constituency as we battle to save one of the biggest mills in Scotland. I have no doubt whatsoever that the Scottish textile sector has a positive future, but it desperately needs proper Government support. Today's official figures on manufacturing are cast iron proof that Ministers need to act now."
