Following the announcement of the coalition government's programme for the next 5 years Highland MSP Jamie Stone has written to the Prime Minister and Deputy Prime Minister to request that the Highlands are given the opportunity to have a pilot scheme to help with the costs of fuel in rural areas.
As yet, no details of the how the scheme might work have been released, but Mr Stone believes anything that will help reduce the burden of fuel costs would be welcome, and that the Highlands would be the right place to undertake the project.
Speaking from Parliament Mr Stone said:
"There are many good initiatives in the coalition's programme for Government however after looking through the document - proposals for a pilot to help with fuel costs jumped out."
"I welcome the fact that the coalition has recognised the difficulties faced by those living in rural areas due to high fuel costs and I have written to the Prime Minister and his Deputy requesting that the Highlands are given serious consideration for the first pilot."
"We are really suffering in the Highlands due to the cost of fuel so any scheme to relieve some of the monetary pressure - on both households and businesses - is going to be roundly applauded."
