Commenting after speaking to the NUS/UCU rally at the Scottish Parliament, Liberal Democrat Education spokesperson Margaret Smith said:
"It's crucial to remember that higher education is devolved.
"Decisions about Scottish Higher Education are taken in the Scottish Parliament.
"Thanks to the votes of Liberal Democrat MSPs, Scottish students don't pay tuition fees.
"Scottish Liberal Democrats will be doing all we can to protect higher education funding in Scotland in this year's budget discussions by a range of measures including bringing down top pay in universities.
"We need to find a new Scottish solution to the issue of funding higher education which acknowledges the importance of higher education to our society and Scotland's economy and recognises once and for all that access to higher education should be based on the ability to learn and not the ability to pay."
