Commenting on the Commission on School Reform's final report, ScottishLiam McArthurLiam McArthur Liberal Democrat education spokesperson Liam McArthur MSP said:

"Scotland enjoys an enviable reputation when it comes to education, but we must remain vigilant against any sense of complacency.

"Those emerging from our schools enter an environment that is rapidly changing, where the challenges and opportunities are global. They need the skills and confidence to thrive and succeed.

"This places great pressure on our education system to adapt and reform. As well as drawing confidence from the solid foundations we have, we must also learn from the experience of other countries.

"The Commission of School Reform is a welcome contribution to this debate about how we secure further improvements in our schools and across our education system. Giving head teachers more control over decisions in their schools, encouraging innovation in the way education is delivered and ensuring that we focus on early intervention are all important to achieving these improvements.

"It is excellent that the Commission has thrown its weight behind Liberal Democrat calls to invest in children's education before the age of three. Providing free nursery places to forty percent of two year olds, starting with those from the poorest backgrounds, would begin to address the shame of inequality which takes root in our schools. Extending free nursery care to more two year olds is an innovative move that would build a stronger economy in a fairer society, enabling every person to get on in life.

"On that basis, I hope the Scottish Government will reflect on the findings of this report and engage constructively with some of its key recommendations."
