"Rather than focussing on getting patients in and out of A&E units faster, the SNP accepted defeat and dropped the A&E treatment target. But SNP ministers should be clear that there can be no shortcuts on patient care.

"Our hard-working NHS staff and patients have been let down by cowboy tactics. What we need from the Government now is a commitment in our NHS which seeks to improve the quality of care. Woefully inadequate winter contingency planning and failure to improve basic IT systems have meant that staff are being expected to deliver more with less.

"Barely a week goes by without a further press release falling apart before our eyes, with real consequences for families across Scotland. The SNP's stewardship of our NHS is quickly veering off course. Mr Neil must get a grip of NHS waiting times, stop cutting targets and work with NHS boards to drive up the quality of patient care."
